Chronolgy of Ibo people's responses
The first time the white men arrived, the Ibo people were worried. They were worried, because they had heard what happened when the first white man had arrived in Abame. Tha Abame people were confused, because he came with an "iron horse". They questioned him and when the man didn't answer in a language they could understand, The Oracle told them to kill him. Later, a big group of white men came and killed everyone in the village of Abame. So when the first white man was spotted in Umuofia, the Ibo people feared what would happen to them. Then once they found out that the man was a missionary they were confused. The fact that the white man only believed that there was only one god was something so foreign to the Ibo people that they laughed at that idea. They were especially confused when the white man said that there was only one god AND that he was made up of three parts. Eventually, people from Umuofia started to convert. The osus especially. The Ibo people still think that the missionaries are bad people. The white men's attitude though varies. Some of them are very nice like, Mr. Brown, who actually cared about the people. On the other hand, Reverend Smith was mean. He didn't really care what happened to the Ibo people. The British views of the Africans and their way of life was that it was bad in a sense. They thought that it was horrible that the in the Ibo society, you would throw twins away when they were born. They also thought that worshipping many gods was stupid. The two seperate beliefs clashed and things for the Ibo people began to fall apart.

"female" virtues
Okonkwo ignores or refuses to acknowledge the
"female" virtues in himself and other by being mean to his wives and
children. When he lived in Umuofia he was viewed as one of the leaders of the
village and was very strong. At that point, he thought that it would mean that
he would not be viewed as a strong man anymore, but as a weak man. So, instead
of showing any emotion, Okonkwo would hurt his wives and children by beating
them. Towards the end of part one, he started to show his emotions towards
Ezinma and Ekwefi. This was a little bit after he talked to his friend about
how the man that had died, loved his wife very much even though he was one of
the strongest men in the village. He was a great warrior, but when it came to
his wife, he showed a lot of love for her. Once Okonkwo and his family were
banned from Umuofia for seven years and he had to go to his motherland of
Mbanta, he started to show even more feelings. Uchendu had given him a talk
about how Okonkwo and others should never hurt or take for granted a mother. A
mother is there to comfort you and care for you when you are sad or ill. A
mother is also helpful with others. The female virtues of a woman are based on
emotions, which, Okonkwo has a hard time with showing his emotions. He still is
stuck on the idea of that a man is looking out mainly for himself only. So,
when Uchendu talks to Okonkwo about a mother, Okonkwo doesn’t quite take to
heart what Uchendu has said. Although Okonkwo has been showing his feelings
more, he still is holding on to the thought of not being like his father. And
since Okonkwo is trying not to be like his father, he cannot really show his
emotions. This is creating problems in his life, because if he cannot show love
for his family, then he might one day lose them and not have anything.

My opinions of Okonkwo
My opinion of Okonkwo is that he is very strict and comes off as a bad person and does bad things, like beating his wives and children, but he ironically means well. I am not saying that beating your wives and children is acceptable or good in any way, but I think that he is trying to make it so that no one in his family is like his father. He hated his father, because he was lazy and couldn't provide anything. So, when Okonkwo sees what he thinks is laziness in his children or wives, he punishes them. He doesn't even show affection to his family, because that was something that his father did. His father always showed affection. Okonkwo doesn't want anyone in his family to be like his father and not do well in life. That is why he punishes in such a harsh manner. He also has a low tolerance level. For example, when his third wife wasn't at home to make dinner for him because she was getting her hair done, he got very angry with her. When the third wife came home he confronted her and beat her very hard. Normally in his village, it was all right to be your wife and kids, but the only time when you cannot do something that harms anything is during the week of peace. Because he broke that rule, he had to give sacrifices to the Earth goddess, so that the village would have a good season for crops. Although Okonkwo comes off as a man that is very bad, he really isn't. I think that some of the people might mistake him to be bad, because he does bad things. But really, he just has good intentions.
