Chronolgy of Ibo people's responses
The first time the white men arrived, the Ibo people were worried. They were worried, because they had heard what happened when the first white man had arrived in Abame. Tha Abame people were confused, because he came with an "iron horse". They questioned him and when the man didn't answer in a language they could understand, The Oracle told them to kill him. Later, a big group of white men came and killed everyone in the village of Abame. So when the first white man was spotted in Umuofia, the Ibo people feared what would happen to them. Then once they found out that the man was a missionary they were confused. The fact that the white man only believed that there was only one god was something so foreign to the Ibo people that they laughed at that idea. They were especially confused when the white man said that there was only one god AND that he was made up of three parts. Eventually, people from Umuofia started to convert. The osus especially. The Ibo people still think that the missionaries are bad people. The white men's attitude though varies. Some of them are very nice like, Mr. Brown, who actually cared about the people. On the other hand, Reverend Smith was mean. He didn't really care what happened to the Ibo people. The British views of the Africans and their way of life was that it was bad in a sense. They thought that it was horrible that the in the Ibo society, you would throw twins away when they were born. They also thought that worshipping many gods was stupid. The two seperate beliefs clashed and things for the Ibo people began to fall apart.
