My opinions of Okonkwo

My opinion of Okonkwo is that he is very strict and comes off as a bad person and does bad things, like beating his wives and children, but he ironically means well. I am not saying that beating your wives and children is acceptable or good in any way, but I think that he is trying to make it so that no one in his family is like his father. He hated his father, because he was lazy and couldn't provide anything. So, when Okonkwo sees what he thinks is laziness in his children or wives, he punishes them. He doesn't even show affection to his family, because that was something that his father did. His father always showed affection. Okonkwo doesn't want anyone in his family to be like his father and not do well in life. That is why he punishes in such  a harsh manner. He also has a low tolerance level. For example, when his third wife wasn't at home to make dinner for him because she was getting her hair done, he got very angry with her. When the third wife came home he confronted her and beat her very hard. Normally in his village, it was all right to be your wife and kids, but the only time when you cannot do something that harms anything is during the week of peace. Because he broke that rule, he had to give sacrifices to the Earth goddess, so that the village would have a good season for crops. Although Okonkwo comes off as a man that is very bad, he really isn't. I think that some of the people might mistake him to be bad, because he does bad things. But really, he just has good intentions.
